Walkthrough for this lesson
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- Your Ideal Customer Profile (ICP) is a clear description of the exact customer you serve best. It makes every later step faster and more accurate
- This market analysis becomes your “source document.” You'll paste it back into the AI later so its answers stay grounded in your real business
- Watch for the [VERIFY] tag: the AI flags any competitor detail it isn't sure about so you can fact-check it
Why we start here
It's tempting to jump straight to “find me customers.” But if you haven't first gotten clear on who your best customer actually is, the AI will hand you a vague, generic list, and you'll waste hours chasing the wrong people. This lesson prevents that. You'll spend about half an hour building a sharp picture of your ideal customer, and it will make every step that follows faster, easier, and more accurate.
What's an “Ideal Customer Profile”?
Your Ideal Customer Profile (“ICP” for short) is a detailed description of the type of customer you serve best: the ones who are easiest to win, happiest with your work, and most profitable for you. Instead of a fuzzy “small businesses,” a strong ICP sounds like “dental offices in San Diego with two to four locations, whose office manager is frustrated by patient no-shows.” That sharpness is exactly what lets the AI find real matches later, instead of a generic crowd.
To build it, the AI will interview you about your business and turn your answers into a structured analysis: your ideal customer, their real pain points (in their own words), your strongest selling points, the competitors they're weighing, and where you fit in the market.
Step by step
- •Open Gemini and paste in the Market Analysis prompt below. Because you filled in your business profile, your details are already in place.
- •Read what it gives back, and keep the conversation going. If a section feels generic, push back, for example: “the pain points sound too generic; rewrite them as something my customer would actually say out loud.” Remember, it's a conversation.
- •Look for the [VERIFY] tag. In the competitor section, the AI marks anything it isn't fully sure about with [VERIFY]. Treat those as homework (a quick search to confirm them) because, as you learned, AI can state wrong facts confidently.
- •Save the finished result to a Google Doc named “Market Analysis - [Your Business] - [Date].” You'll reuse this document in the next few lessons, so keep it handy.
Why saving it matters: this is “grounding”
Here's where the last lesson pays off. In the lessons ahead, you'll paste this market analysis back into the AI as background before asking it to find prospects or write messages. Feeding it your real, specific information like this is called “grounding,” and it keeps the AI's answers tied to your actual business instead of generic guesses. Grounded answers are dramatically better, and far less likely to be made up. Think of this document as the single source of truth you'll hand to your AI assistant again and again.
One more tip from the basics lesson: do this in a fresh, focused chat to avoid “context rot.” When you move to the next lesson, you'll open a new chat and paste this document in. That's by design, not busywork.
Put it into practice
Run the Market Analysis prompt, fact-check anything tagged [VERIFY] with a quick search, and save the finished output to a Google Doc you'll reuse in the lessons ahead.
